State Insurance Department Directory — File a Complaint or Verify a Licensed Insurer

If an insurer denies a valid claim or you suspect unfair pricing, your state's insurance department is the regulator that can actually investigate, and most run a separate free consumer complaint line apart from the main switchboard. This directory has the exact phone number and website for all fifty states plus DC.

In California, the California Department of Insurance above also regulates the state's insurer of last resort. See The California FAIR Plan, Explained for what it covers and why most homeowners on it need a second policy too.

Sources and methodology

Contact information is sourced from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) official state insurance department directory and the American Policyholder Association's state department listing, cross-checked against each department's own website, as of August 2026. Where a department lists a single consumer hotline rather than separate main and consumer numbers, that number is shown in both columns. Departments update phone numbers and staff periodically, so if a number does not connect, search the department name plus your state to find the current listing.

This directory is provided for informational purposes to help you reach the correct regulator. StatewiseFinance is not affiliated with any state insurance department.
